How to convert HEIC to JPG
Short answer: open the photo with a tool that can decode HEIC, export it as JPG, keep the original. On a Mac that is Preview (built in), on Windows it is Paint plus the HEIF extension, and in any browser you can drag the file into theconverter at the top of this page — no install, no upload.
iPhone photos have been saved as HEIC since iOS 11. The format is genuinely better for phone storage — smaller files, same visible quality — but JPG remains the format everything else accepts: websites, email recipients, printers, forms, Windows machines without extensions installed. Knowing how to convert HEIC to JPG on demand is the compatibility skill that makes the rest of your photo library usable everywhere.
Method 1: Convert HEIC to JPG in your browser (works on any computer)
This is the method with zero setup: no app store, no account, no file size hunt through folders. Drag your photos into the converter below, JPG is already selected, and each result gets a download button the moment it finishes. Up to 20 photos convert as one batch.
The reason to prefer it on shared or locked-down machines: the decoding engine runs inside the tab itself, so nothing gets installed on the computer and nothing gets uploaded — the photo never leaves the device it was opened on.
Method 2: On Mac, using Preview (built in)
Double-click any .heic file — macOS opens it in Preview. Choose File → Export, set the format dropdown to JPEG, pick a quality slider position (Medium to High is the sweet spot), and save. Apple’s own Preview guide documents this exact path inConvert image file types using Preview.
For many photos at once, select them all in Finder, right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image, choose JPEG and your size preference. Both routes are offline — macOS decodes HEIC natively.
Method 3: On Windows, using Paint (built in)
Windows cannot decode .heic out of the box. One-time setup: install theHEIF Image Extensions from the Microsoft Store. After that, open the photo in Paint (right-click → Open with → Paint), then File → Save As → JPEG picture.
If installing software is not an option — a work laptop, a kiosk, a Chromebook in disguise — use the browser converter instead; it does not rely on the operating system’s codecs at all.
Method 4: On iPhone — stop creating HEIC instead
The iPhone cannot convert its own camera roll to JPG in bulk, but you can make the camera produce JPG directly: Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible. Future photos are JPG; existing ones stay HEIC. Apple describes both settings inUsing HEIF or HEVC media on Apple devices — High Efficiency keeps storage use low, Most Compatible maximizes share-ability.
Method 5: Rename the extension? (No.)
Changing photo.heic to photo.jpg does not convert anything — the bytes inside are still HEIC data, and the receiving app will show a corrupt file error. Real conversion means decoding the image and re-encoding it, which is exactly what every method above does.
