How to convert HEIC to JPG on Mac

Short answer: open the HEIC in Preview, choose File → Export, set the format to JPEG, save. Every Mac made in the last decade can do this with tools that are already installed — no app, no upload, no cost.

Macs are the one platform where HEIC is a non-problem: macOS has decoded the format natively since High Sierra, so every route below works offline. The reason people still search for it is the second half of the job — the converted file has to go somewhere that doesnot speak HEIC: a Windows colleague, a school portal, a web form, a photo lab.

Way 1: Preview (the standard route)

Double-click the .heic — it opens in Preview. File → Export, click theFormat dropdown, choose JPEG, set the quality slider (High is the default sweet spot), pick a destination, press Save. Apple documents this exact flow inConvert image file types using Preview. Hold Option in the File menu to turn Export into “Export as…” for a batch of selected photos.

Way 2: Finder quick action (fastest for folders)

Select a folder’s worth of photos in Finder, right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image. Choose JPEG, pick Original/Small/Medium/Large size, press Convert. The JPGs appear next to the originals. This is the closest thing macOS has to a bulk HEIC to JPG converter, and it is already on your machine.

Way 3: Photos app export

If the photo already lives in your Photos library: select it, File → Export → Export N Photos, choose JPEG and the quality/size options. Useful when the originals came from an iPhone sync rather than sitting loose in a folder.

Way 4: Browser converter (when it is not your Mac)

Borrowed laptop, office machine with managed permissions, or a photo too large for your local setup? Drag it into the converter below — it runs in the tab, installs nothing, and uploads nothing. JPG is the default output; switch to PNG or PDF with the buttons at the top.

HEIC to JPG on Mac: FAQ

Does macOS convert HEIC to JPG without extra software?

Yes. Preview exports any HEIC as JPEG, PNG, TIFF or other formats, and Finder’s Convert Image quick action handles whole folders. No third-party app is needed on any Mac that can open the photo.

Why do my exported JPGs look slightly different from the HEIC?

JPEG is lossy, so fine detail is approximated to shrink the file. At Preview’s High quality setting the difference is hard to spot on screen; for prints or further editing, keep the original HEIC alongside the JPG.

Can a Mac open HEIC files from an iPhone?

Natively — Photos imports them, Preview opens them directly, and AirDrop transfers keep the format. The friction only starts when the photo has to go to a Windows machine, a web form or an email recipient.

How do I batch convert on a Mac?

Select the photos in Finder, right-click → Quick Actions → Convert Image, then choose JPEG and a size. For full control over quality per photo, open them in Preview’s sidebar and export with the option key held.

Keep the originals. Convert to JPG for sharing, but leave the HEIC files in place — they are the higher-efficiency masters, and re-encoding a JPG again later loses quality a second time.
